Mini-Presentations & Peer Interpretation

For this activity, we worked in groups of three to practice public speaking, active listening, and consecutive interpretation. Each of us had to prepare a short 3–4-minute presentation on a topic of our choice and then interpret one of our classmates’ presentations from English into Spanish.

In my group, together with my classmates, we decided to present about our favorite singers. Each of us gave our presentation in English while another member of the group interpreted it into Spanish. This required us to pay close attention, take notes, and then reproduce the message with the same meaning, tone, and fluency.

In my experience, this activity was much more challenging than the previous ones because it truly tested our listening, speaking, and interpretation skills in real time. It was not just about translating words, but about understanding the message deeply and expressing it naturally in the target language. Even though it was difficult, it was also a very rewarding and enriching experience, as it helped me improve my confidence, concentration, and ability to react quickly while interpreting.


Activity: Interpretation Task – Mirror Class on Picture Books

For this activity, we had to watch the video recording of the mirror class on picture books and select a two-minute fragment in which Professor Daniel Calderón was speaking. The goal was to imagine that we were interpreting him from English to Spanish in real time. After choosing the fragment, I recorded a five-minute video showing both myself and the class recording in the background. I paused the video whenever necessary, but I tried to make my interpretation as smooth and natural as possible, just as it would be in a real simultaneous-interpreting situation.

In my personal experience, I felt more comfortable than I expected, since interpreting in real time is always a challenge. However, it was still a complex task that required concentration, fast thinking, and good control of vocabulary and structure. Overall, it was a demanding but very valuable learning experience that helped me improve my confidence and interpreting skills.
